Brassica oleracea

HEIRLOOM. This reliable, heavy-yielding variety has been a favorite since its introduction in the late 1800s. Compact, 20-inch-tall plants produce 50 to 100 large, tightly headed, dark green sprouts per stalk.

For Southern gardeners, Long Island Improved brussels sprouts will do best when started indoors in mid-late summer, then transplanted out as temperatures cool off in early fall. Northern growers can also start them in early spring. They will need full sun and well-drained, fertile soil amended with plenty of compost. Sprouts begin maturing about 80 days after transplanting. 1.75 gram packet contains about 450 seeds.
